It was a rainy afternoon, the kind that makes everything feel heavier. I was sitting in my dimly lit office, nursing a cup of coffee that had gone cold hours ago. The world outside was a blur of grays and blues, the sound of raindrops tapping against the window like a relentless interrogation.

Then there was a knock on the door. Not the usual timid knock of someone who needed help but wasn't sure how to ask. No, this was the solid, confident knock of someone who knew exactly what they wanted. I got up and opened the door to find a delivery guy standing there, holding a large, weather-beaten package.

"Sign here," he said, shoving a clipboard in my direction. I signed, took the package, and watched him disappear back into the rain. The package was heavier than it looked, wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string, like something out of an old detective movie. My name was scrawled across the top in familiar handwriting.

I carried it to my desk and set it down. As I untied the string and peeled back the paper, a letter slipped out. I picked it up and recognized the handwriting immediately. It was from Arch, an old friend from a long time ago. We shared a past that was as mysterious as it was troubling, but that's a story for another time.

I unfolded the letter and began to read:

Hey Hal,

I hope this letter finds you well. It's been a while since we last spoke, and I wish I was writing under better circumstances. I have somehow found myself nestled into a small town working on a school board of all things.  We have a situation at the High School, SideEye High,  that I believe only you can get to the bottom of. In the past month, two students have died under suspicious circumstances. The police have been through and officially the deaths are being ruled as accidents, but something doesn't sit right with me, and the school board shares my concerns.

We're bringing you in under the guise of conducting a safety audit for the insurance company. You know the drill – look around, ask questions, and see what shakes loose. I wish I could say more, but I trust you'll understand the delicate nature of this matter. The principal, Hayes, doesn't know the real reason for your presence, and it's better if it stays that way for now. There's a lot of history there, and trust is a rare commodity.

Enclosed are the police reports for the two student deaths. I thought you might want to get a head start before you arrive at the school. Be careful, Hal. I have a feeling this is bigger than it seems.

I set the letter down and turned my attention to the rest of the package. Inside were two police reports, each with the cold, clinical details of a young life cut short.

Two kids, dead within a month. Officially accidents, but Arch had a nose for trouble, and I trusted his instincts. There was something rotten at SideEye High, and I owe it to him to dig it out.

I took a deep breath, folded the reports back up, and put them in my briefcase. The rain outside was letting up, but the storm was just beginning. I had a job to do, and it was time to get to work.
